Description
Autograph Letter Signed — Maj. Gen. David Hunter
Washington, November 30, 1864
Autograph letter containing a period albumen image, signed by David Hunter, dated Washington, Nov. 30, 1864. Written in a bold, flowing hand, the letter opens from Washington and is addressed “Dear Sir,” conveying Hunter’s courteous compliance with a request, closing with the line “Very sincerely,” followed by his strong signature, “D. Hunter, Maj. Gen.”
The letter remains in excellent period condition. The clarity and confidence of Hunter’s signature make this an especially desirable example for collectors of Civil War autographs and Union high-command material.
David Hunter was a prominent Union major general, best known for his controversial but historically significant role in early emancipation efforts in the South and his service in the Western and Southern theaters. Autographed material from Hunter, particularly cleanly signed wartime correspondence from Washington, remains scarce and highly sought after. The image is one found on a collage CDV of Union commanders carefully trimmed and included by the General.
Comes housed in a 14″ x 8″ display case with blue velvet backing and descriptive card.
