Awesome Civil War Grouping of James Ale of the 24th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry
Awesome Civil War Grouping of James Ale of the 24th New Jersey volunteer infantry an epic example of an identified Civil War canteen featuring an old ink tag from a Museum stating used by – James Ale Civil War 1865 an additional paper label is afixed to the cover stating loaned by Ira Ale – 161 Franklin St., Frankfurt Philadelphia. Additionally, his initials are stenciled in an off-white paint on the original wool canteen cover. The canteen retains the lower portion of the strap, the original cork and stopper. Yet another 4th method of identification on the canteen has Ale’s hand-carved first initial and last name in the soft pewter spout.
The canteen is accompanied by his folding mess set utensil. An ingenious design consisting of a German silver spoon, two tined fork, and knife marked – Union Army Knife Company.
The grouping also consists of a wonderful pair of civilian style brass spurs with iron rowels and a pair of heart rosettes, which are matching, another additional larger rosette also bears a raised heart design.
A tintype of Ale just post war of James Ale mounted in a handmade wooden frame with gold border and his 1861 dated leather pocket Bible, which was carried throughout the war.
Lastly, there is a veteran’s celluloid pin of the colonel of the regiment.
This collection is photographed in part in the book Gone for a Soldier, New Jersey in the Civil War.
