California Union Club Patriotic Silk Ribbon
Fourth of July Celebration July 4, 1861
An exceptionally scarce Civil War-era patriotic silk ribbon commemorating the Union Club of California’s Fourth of July celebration held on July 4, 1861, just months after the outbreak of the American Civil War. Produced at a time when the nation’s future hung in the balance, this ribbon served as a bold declaration of California’s loyalty to the Union.
The ribbon is beautifully printed in patriotic red and blue on white silk. The upper panel features the Liberty Bell beneath the heading “July 4th, 1776,” linking the founding principles of American independence with the Union cause. Below appears the stirring slogan “California – True to the Flag,” emphasizing the state’s commitment to preserving the Union during the nation’s greatest crisis.
The central vignette depicts a patriotic figure proudly raising the American flag beside a directional sign reading “To Montgomery,” a symbolic reference to the Confederate capital in Montgomery, Alabama, underscoring the determination to confront the rebellion. The ribbon concludes with the bold inscription “Union Club – July 4th, 1861,” identifying the organization responsible for this patriotic commemorative.
The Union Club of California, established in San Francisco at the outbreak of the Civil War, became one of the state’s leading pro-Union organizations, rallying public support for the Federal government and demonstrating that California remained steadfastly loyal despite the conflict raging thousands of miles away. Patriotic ribbons of this nature were worn during political rallies, parades, and Independence Day celebrations and survive today in remarkably limited numbers.
This example retains strong, vibrant printing and attractive color on its original silk.
An exceptionally desirable artifact of Civil War patriotism, this rare California Union Club ribbon beautifully bridges the ideals of 1776 with the struggle to preserve the Union in 1861, making it an important addition to collections of Civil War textiles, political memorabilia, patriotic Americana, and California history.
