Cased Civil War Soldier Figural Meerschaum Pipe

 

Outstanding cased figural meerschaum pipe depicting a bearded Civil War soldier wearing a kepi, likely representing a Union infantryman of the American Civil War era. Beautifully carved with exceptional attention to detail, the soldier’s flowing beard, expressive features, and military cap form the bowl of the pipe, while decades of careful use have produced a rich amber and honey-colored patina highly prized by collectors. The pipe retains its original amber stem and decorative metal ferrule, housed in its original fitted case lined in burgundy velvet.

 

Figural military meerschaum pipes enjoyed great popularity during the mid-19th century, with Civil War subjects among the most desirable and recognizable themes. Surviving examples retaining their original fitted cases are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly those displaying strong carving and attractive coloration from age and use.
