Cavalry Saber, Belt and Cannonball Identified to George Jacobs
4th Michigan Cavalry Captor of Jefferson Davis
A remarkable and historically significant Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, complete with its original scabbard, belt, buckle, and matching numbered keeper (#826). This regulation saber is clearly marked on the ricasso “D. J. Millard / Clayville, N.Y.” and dated 1862, representing one of approximately 10,000 sabers produced by Millard under U.S. contract during the Civil War.
This example is identified to George Jacobs of the famed 4th Michigan Cavalry, a regiment credited with the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in May 1865 near Irwinville, Georgia. Jacobs is recorded as one of the Union soldiers involved in the historic pursuit and apprehension.
The saber itself is in very good condition, with a bright, curved blade exhibiting light age and wear, retaining sharp edges and a clear fuller. The brass hilt shows a mellow, untouched patina, and the original leather grip and twisted wire wrap remain intact. The iron scabbard has a smooth brown finish with no significant dents or damage. Lacking the last ½ inch of the blade tip, appears to have been a wartime fracture as the patina matches.
The rig is further complemented by its original leather cavalry belt, complete with U.S. regulation 1851 eagle sword belt plate and matching keeper, both marked #826, consistent with wartime issued sets. The silver wreath lacks a section of the wreath from use. The overall condition is sound, with the leather supple and stitching and sword gander straps intact and still affixed to the saber.
Accompanied by provenance tying this set to George Jacobs and an iron grape shot with a cryptic inscription which he brought home, this grouping represents an extraordinary opportunity to own a weapon carried by a Union cavalryman present at one of the final moments of the Civil War—the dramatic capture of the fleeing Confederate president.
A superb addition to any advanced Civil War collection, rich in both martial character and historical narrative. A notarized letter of provenance accompanies the group.
