Description

CDV of General Mansfield Lovell, C.S.A. – Inventory Number: CDV 510 Scarce CDV image of Confederate Geneal Lovell wearing his regulation CS General’s uniform with collar insignia visible.  A neat pencil inscription at the bottom of the cardstock mount reads: Genl. Lovell C.S.A.  Backmark: E&H.T. Anthony – New York. Mansfield Lovell was born in the District of Columbia. He was the commander of New Orleans when the city fell to the Union Navy in 1862. Lovell was criticized by local citizens for failing to predict a naval invasion. The Confederate government heaped blame on him, to deflect attention from their error in leaving so few troops to defend the city. A Court of Enquiry later cleared him of charges of incompetence, but his reputation never recovered. * To purchase this item directly by credit card, please click this link.   Inventory Number: CDV 510
