Description
Civil War Brass Eagle
A fine and substantial gilt-brass spread-wing eagle, dating to the Civil War era, measuring approximately 28 ½”. The eagle is cast in bold relief with detailed feathering, grasping arrows and olive branch in its talons, symbolizing both war and peace. The piece retains its original tin back plate, secured by lead solder, with surviving black enamel finish on protected areas. Mounting loops and holes are still present, indicating this was once affixed to a patriotic display.
Cleaned brass surface with a tin back with expected wear and darkened finish; lead soldered seams are overall stable. Excellent surviving mid-19th century mounted eagle. Both Eaglets and full-size eagles like this were widely used during the Civil War as patriotic adornments for battle flags, regimental standards, military buildings, and presentation staffs. The combination of gilt-brass face, tin backing, lead solder, method of affixing and enamel traces is highly characteristic of wartime manufacture. An awesome Civil War period eagle with a strong display presence. An icon of Union symbolism.
