Description
Civil War Brogans
Original pair of Civil War–era leather brogans, exhibiting classic construction. These ankle-high shoes feature squared toes, hand-stitched uppers, and pegged soles, consistent with military-issue and contract footwear of the period. There are five eyelets; laces are present in one shoe. The leather shows honest wear from age and use, with expected creasing and surface loss, while retaining strong overall form. The soles are clearly marked “S & B”, likely indicating the original maker or contractor. A scarce survivor representing the everyday material culture of the Civil War soldier. Deaccessed from the Texas Museum.
