Civil War Brogans
U.S. Army Issue Brogans – Dated 1860
A scarce and early pair of U.S. Army issue brogans, clearly marked and dated “March 6 1860”. Constructed of heavy blackened leather with pegged soles, square toes, and interior stitching typical of Federal manufacture. These shoes represent the standard pattern issued to Union infantry at the onset of the Civil War.
Previously misattributed as Confederate due to their wooden soles, closer inspection reveals the 1860 contract date—predating mass wartime production and aligning with early Federal Ordnance Department specifications.
Retains excellent form overall with surface wear and loss consistent with age and field use. One shoe exhibits collapse from deterioration; separated fragments remain present and a worthy restoration endeavor. Despite wear, construction details and markings remain legible and provide invaluable reference for early-war U.S. issue footwear.
An exceptional example of regulation Union brogans—illustrating the standard shoe worn by soldiers at the outbreak of the Civil War.
