Description
Civil War Bullseye Canteen with Cover by Hadden, Porter & Booth, Philadelphia
A classic Civil War–era concentric ring “bullseye” canteen, retaining its original cloth cover, stopper, and chain. The pewter spout is clearly maker-marked Hadden, Porter & Booth, Philadelphia, a well-documented contractor producing canteens for Federal forces during the war.
The canteen body exhibits the desirable concentric “bullseye” pattern, with the period cloth cover showing scattered staining and wear consistent with field use. The surface presents a warm, untouched patina, offering strong visual character. The original stopper and retaining chain remain in place, with the suspension strap present and showing expected age and use.
Canteens of this type were essential equipment for the Civil War soldier, carried daily on campaign and often subjected to hard service. Surviving examples retaining their covers and marked spouts are increasingly sought after, particularly those exhibiting honest, unaltered condition.
A well-preserved and highly displayable example of a regulation Federal canteen, representing the everyday experience of the common soldier in the field.
