Description
Civil War Era Gold Brooch/Pin with T-Bar and Open Clasp
A finely crafted mid-19th century brooch, dating to the Civil War era, fashioned in gold with elegant hand-engraved borders. The piece features a bold central design of paired circular motifs joined by a horizontal bar with decorative finials, all worked in a neoclassical style popular during the 1850s–1860s.
The reverse retains its original T-bar hinge, pin, and open “C” clasp, a configuration characteristic of mid-19th century jewelry, prior to the introduction of safety catches in the 1890s. The pin mechanism remains intact and functional.
Jewelry of this type was often worn by women during the Civil War years, either as mourning jewelry or as fashionable adornment, and examples survive in both gold and gold-filled construction.
