Description
Civil War Era Gutta Percha and Wood Pipe Bowl
A fine period example of a soldier’s smoking pipe bowl dating to the Civil War era. The lower section is fashioned from gutta percha (a hardened natural resin widely used during the mid-19th century for personal items such as combs, cases, and pipe fittings), while the upper bowl is turned from hardwood. The wood shows a warm, even patina from long use, with darkened interior walls from period smoking. The gutta percha base retains a smooth, glossy surface with only minor abrasions consistent with field carry. Measures approximately 2 ¾” in height with a 1 1/4” diameter bowl. A classic soldier’s personal item, combining practicality with durable wartime materials.
