Description
Civil War–Era Iron Candle Holder with Period Identification Label
Original Civil War–era iron candle holder, retaining an early handwritten paper identification label affixed to the upper section. The old handwritten ink label references the Civil War (1861–1865) ., an early effort to identify and preserve wartime relics.
This utilitarian example features a vertical spike designed to be driven into wood or earth, allowing the candle holder to be secured to camp furniture, timbers, or field structures, with a lateral arm forming the candle socket. Such spike-mounted candle holders were commonly used by soldiers in camp, field hospitals, and temporary quarters where lighting was limited.
