Civil War Era Mallory & Wheeler Padlock 

Original Civil War-era iron padlock manufactured by Mallory & Wheeler Co. of New Haven, Connecticut, one of America’s important early lock and architectural hardware manufacturers. Established in 1834, Mallory & Wheeler became well known during the 19th century for producing quality locks, padlocks, ornamental hardware, doorknobs, and other builders’ hardware. 

This substantial period padlock is of classic mid-19th-century construction, representative of the heavy security locks encountered during the Civil War period for securing trunks, chests, storerooms, military supplies, and other valuable property. Mallory & Wheeler remained a major New Haven manufacturer throughout the remainder of the 19th century before ultimately closing in 1913. 

A desirable piece of Civil War-era material culture from a documented American manufacturer. The lock retains an attractive untouched age patina and displays well as an example of the everyday hardware used during the period. No key is present.
