Description

CIVIL WAR–ERA QUININE SULPHATE BOTTLE

Powers & Weightman, Philadelphia, ca. 1855–1865

A fine Civil War–period Powers & Weightman apothecary bottle containing its original quinine sulphate, with the period factory-view label and intact cork stopper. The glass retains the classic hand-finished lip and cylindrical form typical of mid-19th-century pharmaceutical containers.

Quinine was the most critical medicinal drug of the Civil War, used extensively to treat and prevent malaria—one of the leading causes of sickness in both armies. Powers & Weightman was the nation’s principal producer of quinine, supplying large quantities to Union military hospitals.

A scarce and desirable survivor with original contents and excellent label presentation.
