Description

Civil War Era Snake Buckle – Inventory Number: BEL 371 / SOLD English manufactured three-piece snake buckles come in many varieties and were imported in large numbers by the Confederacy; some made their way into the hands of Union soldiers as well. This non-excavated example is made of cast brass with twisted brass belt loops. The single headed snake measures 44mm with many well defined, rounded scales and crosscut bottom scales with a lengthwise keel. A similar example appears on page 38, plate 53 of Snake Buckles: From Ancient Times to the mid-20th Century by John E. Turner & Charles S. Harris. A very fine example. Of a classic Civil War buckle.
