Civil War Froggatt Handcuffs
Excellent example of Darby style screw key handcuffs by Froggatt, a classic pattern prized for its sturdy construction and early locking mechanism. Crafted from hand-forged iron, these cuffs feature a solid swivel link chain and include the original working key—a rare survival in examples of this age.
Each cuff is clearly marked:
“FROGGATT WARRANTED WROUGHT” along with the stamped number “25.”
The markings identify these as the patented design of Thomas Froggatt, a respected English maker whose restraints were widely used by law enforcement and military police in both Britain and America during the mid-to-late 19th century.
The heavy wrought-iron construction and riveted joints show excellent integrity, with a deep, untouched patina.
An exceptional, well-marked example of early restraint.
