Loyalty to the union and to recognize all laws made “with reference to the emancipation of slaves. “Provost Marshall signature at base. R. J. Mitcham – Residence Cleveland County, NC; a 27-year-old Farmer. Enlisted on 3/18/1862 at Cleveland County, NC as a Priv.  On 4/17/1862, he mustered into “G” Co. North Carolina 49th Infantry.  He was listed as:      •    AWOL 11/15/1862     •    Returned 1/15/1863     •    Wounded 5/16/1864 Drewry’s Bluff, VA     •    Hospitalized 5/20/1864 Richmond, VA     •    Returned 7/13/1864     •    Deserted to enemy 2/24/1865     •    Confined 2/27/1865 Washington, DC     •    Oath of Allegiance Washington, DC.
