Description
Civil War Period Song Manuscript – Written by 2nd Lt. J.T. Hart, Co. I, 48th North Carolina Infantry, Union County, N.C.
An original, handwritten Civil War-era song composed by 2nd Lieutenant J.T. Hart of Company I, 48th North Carolina Infantry Regiment.
Penned in period brown ink on lined paper, the piece features patriotic verses with strong Southern sentiment, invoking divine protection and celebrating the Confederate cause. Lines reference “Southern boys… fighting” and the “Southern banner, emblem of the free,” reflecting the fervent morale-building tone of wartime music and verse.
The manuscript shows typical period wear with fold lines and age toning. Song sheet has been laminated — an outdated preservation method that nonetheless reflects past archival efforts.
A period identification note in Hart’s hand (or attributed to him) appears at the bottom of the sheet, and the accompanying modern display tag reads:
CIVIL WAR PERIOD SONG WRITTEN BY: J.T. HART, 2ND LT., CO. (I), 48TH N.C. REGIMENT, UNION COUNTY, N.C.
The 48th North Carolina Infantry served with the Army of Northern Virginia, participating in major engagements including Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign. Songs and poems written by Confederate officers are scarce, especially those tied to identified individuals with a documented service record.
A wonderful personal relic of the Confederate war effort, offering a rare glimpse into the morale, culture, and literary expression of a serving officer in the field.
