Civil War Regulation Issue Tin Cup – With Reinforced Bail Handle

 

A classic Civil War regulation issue enlisted man’s tin cup, constructed of heavy gauge sheet iron/tin and retaining a pleasing untouched attic patina throughout. The form is textbook, with a rolled rim and a reinforced bail-style wire handle secured by side brackets, designed for durability in the field and ease of attachment to gear.

 

This example has a soldier-applied initials and what appears to be partial unit information inscribed into the body of the cup. Such markings were commonly added by soldiers to prevent loss or confusion in camp, and they provide a direct and personal connection to the original owner. The curvature and placement of the inscription suggest it was done during the period of use rather than later.

 

The cup remains in excellent condition, especially for a utilitarian field item, with no significant damage noted and a strong, solid feel indicative of its heavier construction. The handle is intact and secure, and the overall surface shows honest use without compromise.
