Description

Civil War Signal Cannon on Original Wood Base

Overall measurements: 16” x 6” x 5” An evocative relic of Civil War communication, this small signal cannon retains its original period character with a pleasing untouched surface and deep patina from long storage. The cylindrical iron barrel, aged yet structurally sound, remains mounted on its original block of aged hardwood—showing burn scarring and wear consistent with field service. Signal cannons such as this were employed to relay orders, sound alarms, signal yacht races, and coordinate troop movements across battlefields and encampments, their thunderous report carrying over great distances. This example measures 16 inches in overall length, with the base block 6 inches wide by 5 inches tall. The vent hole is clearly visible, and the muzzle retains its original form, though with light corrosion from decades of exposure. A length of period iron wire remains attached at the rear, likely used for handling or fastening during use.

Seldom encountered outside institutional collections, this is a fine example of a field signal piece. Its survival on its original mounting block adds substantially to its authenticity and display appeal.
