Civil War Tintype in Rare “Oreo” Thermoplastic Case  

An attractive Civil War-era tintype housed in a scarce and highly collectible thermoplastic photographic case commonly known among collectors as the “Oreo” pattern. Named for its distinctive raised circular motif resembling the famous cookie, this pattern remains one of the most recognizable and sought-after designs produced during the mid-nineteenth century.  

The thermoplastic case is in very good condition, retaining crisp molded detail throughout both halves. The design features a central cross surrounded by ornate scrollwork, raised beadwork, and decorative concentric borders. The rich dark brown coloration displays a pleasing aged patina, and the case presents exceptionally well with strong eye appeal.  

Housed within is a period tintype portrait of a young woman. The image remains clear and well-centered beneath the original brass mat and protective cover glass. Her attire and hairstyle are characteristic of the Civil War era, creating a pleasing example of the personal photographic keepsakes treasured by families during the mid-nineteenth century.  

Introduced in the 1850s, thermoplastic cases quickly became popular due to their durability and elaborate molded designs. Today, specific patterns are avidly collected in their own right, with the “Oreo” motif being among the more desirable examples encountered on the collector market.
