Civil War Teamsters Tintype – 1/6 Plate

A scarce and appealing Civil War 1/6 plate tintype depicting two Union teamsters posed together in a photographer’s studio. Both men wear regulation Federal sky-blue trousers, while their outer fatigue blouses have been removed, revealing the practical shirts, suspenders, and work attire commonly worn while performing the arduous duties of army transportation. Their relaxed poses and rugged appearance provide an uncommon glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers who kept the armies moving.

Military teamsters served as the logistical backbone of the Union Army, driving wagon trains laden with ammunition, food, forage, medical supplies, camp equipage, and ordnance. Often operating miles behind the battle line, these men faced long marches, poor roads, harsh weather, and the constant threat of cavalry raids. Without the thousands of teamsters attached to every army, military campaigns simply could not function.

Unlike the more frequently encountered portraits of armed soldiers in full uniform, this image captures the working soldier in a candid and authentic manner. The striped overshirt, exposed suspenders, and fatigue dress reflect the realities of life on campaign rather than the formality of military parade. A wonderfully honest wartime image that highlights the indispensable yet often overlooked men responsible for sustaining the Union war effort.
