Civil War U.S. Navy Officer Shoulder Boards

 

Scarce pair of original Civil War period U.S. Navy officer’s shoulder boards, retaining their black wool centers with gilt bullion borders and embroidered fouled anchor devices. The boards represent the rank of Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commanding, one of the principal officer grades serving aboard Union naval vessels during the war.  A great original pair with makers label present!

 

Constructed in the classic wartime Navy pattern, the boards display heavy twisted bullion edging surrounding the fields, with silvered anchor insignia applied at center. The mellowed age patina to the bullion and the evident wartime construction give the set an outstanding untouched appearance.

 

Original Civil War naval insignia remains considerably scarcer than comparable Army material, particularly officer-grade embroidered pieces. These shoulder boards would have been worn by an officer serving aboard one of the Union Navy’s blockading squadrons, river gunboats, or ocean-going warships during the great expansion of the Federal Navy from 1861–1865.
