Description

Civil War Union Enlisted Man’s “US” Belt Plate – Model 1839 – Inventory Number: BEL 542 / SOLD This original oval “US” belt plate is a standard-issue piece of Union military equipment from the American Civil War (1861–1865). Constructed of a brass face with lead-filled back, the plate displays the raised “US” letters in bold relief on the front. The reverse features all three original attachment hooks: two arrowhead-style studs and one fastening hook, fully intact—indicating field service rather than post-war commemorative use. Issued in large numbers to Union infantry, cavalry, and artillery, these plates were worn on the leather waist belt supporting cartridge boxes and other gear. The Model 1839 design traces back to the Mexican-American War and remained in use through the Civil War, prized for its durability and simple patriotic symbolism. A quintessential piece of Civil War militaria—perfect for display, collection, or historical interpretation. Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.   Inventory Number: BEL 542 / SOLD
