Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver
Exquisitely Carved Presentation Grips, 1863
Incredible Colt Model 1860 Army revolver, serial number in the 108,000 range, firmly dating production to 1863. The revolver retains a strong cylinder naval engagement scene and crisp mechanical action.
What sets this example apart are its profusely carved one-piece walnut grips, transformed into a remarkable piece of folk-art craftsmanship. One side features a beautifully executed figure of Lady Liberty accompanied by a flowing banner bearing the soldier’s last name: “Green”. The opposite panel displays an elaborate panoply of arms flanked by a pair of Federal shields and prominently dated “1863.” Inlaid stars adorn the grips, with their channels filled in with red wax for striking contrast and depth.
Even the butt of the grips is embellished with incised stars and floral motifs.
An outstanding personalized and highly artistic Civil War-period revolver. Research into the identified soldier remains to be completed, but an exciting potential for further discovery and research.
