Description

Commander John R. Goldsborough, USN

Civil War CDV by E. Anthony from Brady Negative

Excellent full-standing Civil War carte de visite depicting Commander John R. Goldsborough of the United States Navy in formal wartime uniform. Published by E. Anthony of New York “from photographic negative from Brady’s National Portrait Gallery,” one of the most desirable Civil War photographic imprints and directly tied to Mathew Brady’s famed wartime photographic enterprise. Goldsborough is shown wearing a double-breasted naval officer’s frock coat with rank lace clearly visible at the cuffs, holding his cap in hand beside a studio pedestal in a classic Brady-style composition.

John Rodgers Goldsborough (1835–1912) came from the distinguished Goldsborough naval family and served prominently in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. He was attached to the USS Florida in 1862, as noted in period pencil on the reverse, and later rose through the ranks during a long naval career. Naval officer CDVs from the Civil War period remain considerably scarcer than army portraits, particularly identified examples with wartime Brady/Anthony associations.

Reverse bears the desirable E. Anthony / Brady’s National Portrait Gallery imprint along with old collector annotations identifying the sitter and his wartime service aboard USS Florida in 1862. A strong and attractive Civil War naval image with excellent display appeal and solid historical presence.
