Confederate 1-Pound Rains Hand Grenade – Inventory Number: CON 298 / On-hold Scarce Confederate Rains Hand Grenade, designed by Gabriel James Rains of the Confederate ordnance Department. The grenade had a pressure sensitive fuse and a 3’ 6” cloth tail inserted in a slot in the rear of the wooden plug. An alternative version had a 2’ long cloth tail attached to the end of a wooden shaft with pasteboard fins, similar to the U.S. Ketchum grenade. The grenade measures 1 ¾” wide and 4 1/3” long and retains part of the wooden plug or shaft. A silver paint identification to Augusta, Georgia has been applied by noted author/collector Mac Mason.
