Description

Confederate General Robert E. Lee CDV by C.D. Fredericks & Co.

Original carte de visite portrait of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, published by the renowned photographic firm of C.D. Fredericks & Co. of New York. The image depicts Lee in dignified profile wearing his Confederate uniform, captured in a classic postwar studio rendering that became one of the most enduring likenesses of the famed Southern commander.

The mount bears the imprint “C.D. Fredericks & Co. N.Y.” at the lower edge, while the reverse features the firm’s ornate backmark listing locations in New York, Havana, and Paris. An intact blue two-cent Internal Revenue stamp remains affixed to the reverse, tied with period pen cancellation, dating the piece to the Civil War-era federal tax period imposed on photographs between 1864 and 1866.

Fredericks was among the premier nineteenth-century photographic publishers, and Lee portraits by the firm remain highly sought after for both Civil War and Confederate collections. The elegant composition and soft tonal quality give the image exceptional display appeal.

Condition is very good overall with light age toning, minor corner wear, and expected handling consistent with age. The revenue stamp remains especially desirable and adds further period authenticity and collector interest.
