Confederate-Inspected CH/1 Marked 1853 Pattern Enfield Rifle Musket
This well-preserved Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket bears the desirable Confederate inspection mark “CH/1”, one of the marks associated with Confederate purchasing and inspection operations during the American Civil War. Chambered in .577 caliber, this British-made military arm displays an attractive, untouched appearance with rich age and character throughout.
The steel components have developed a pleasing dark brown patina, while the brass nose cap, trigger guard, and buttplate exhibit a mellow mustard-yellow patina with scattered brown speckling. The left side of the barrel at the breech is stamped twice with the number 25, alternating with three British proof marks, with the numerals appearing inverted. The breech area also shows light percussion cap erosion consistent with period military service.
The lock is dated 1861 and marked TOWER beneath the bolster, with the British crown inspection stamp visible to the rear of the lock plate. Mechanically, the lock remains in full working order, holding securely at both half-cock and full-cock positions.
The rifle retains its original stock, which bears a circular CH over 1 inspection stamp on the top of the buttstock just forward of the buttplate. There is a small area of wood loss behind the hammer and bolster, along with a minor crack forward of the lock plate, both noted for accuracy. The stock retains an old lacquer or dried oil finish that has aged nicely over time.
Both sling swivels remain in place; however, the rear sight has been absent as seen on many. The rifling is faintly visible within the bore but shows significant wear from extensive period use.
Confederate-marked Enfields remain among the most sought-after long arms of the Civil War era, and this example offers strong visual appeal, desirable inspection markings, and unquestionable evidence of wartime service.
