Confederate Macon Arsenal Conversion Musketoon
$2,200.00
Description
Confederate Macon Arsenal Conversion Musketoon
Confederate altered musket shortened to musketoon length and associated with the Macon Arsenal conversion program. The firearm combines components from a Model 1816 musket with elements from a Model 1842 including the stock and furniture.
The lock is marked D. Nippes U.S. Mill Creek, Pennsylvania dated 1847. The barrel tang bears the number 44 and the shortened thirty-three inch barrel reflects arsenal modification.
A Confederate reissue stamp “Z” appears on the underside of the stock. Metal components display a deep plum patina. Confederate arsenal alterations such as this illustrate the improvisational nature of Southern arms production.
Confederate assembled and arsenal-altered arms occupy a particularly important place in Civil War collecting, as they speak directly to the chronic shortages of machinery, finished arms, and interchangeable components in the South. Rather than discard damaged or obsolete weapons, Confederate workmen routinely salvaged usable locks, barrels, bands, and furniture, producing serviceable arms from mixed parts. Pieces of this sort are valued not only for their scarcity, but because they so clearly illustrate the improvisational character of Southern wartime manufacture and repair.
