Confederate Martingale Device

 

A very pretty, excavated, large-size, “Star in Shield”, lead-filled device that was inset and worn as a Martingale on horse harness. This example has an excellent, smooth, chocolate brown patina on the face and full lead fill in the reverse. It was recovered from Wharton’s 8th Texas Cavalry camp, occupied during the Spring of 1863 and located just south of Unionville, Tennessee. This example was formerly part of the Texas Civil War Museum collection. Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
