Currier & Ives Lithograph – “General Grant and Family,” 1867
A handsome and original Currier & Ives lithograph titled “General Grant and Family,” published at 152 Nassau Street, New York, in 1867. This celebrated print captures General Ulysses S. Grant, in full uniform, seated beside Mrs. Julia Dent Grant and their four children — Frederick, Ulysses Jr., Jesse Root, and Ellen Wrenshall (“Nellie”) — in an intimate domestic setting.
Issued shortly after the Civil War, this image presents Grant not only as a victorious general but also as a devoted husband and father, reflecting the postwar ideal of the family as the foundation of national unity. Produced by the famed New York lithographers Currier & Ives, it remains one of the firm’s most recognized depictions of the Union’s leading hero.
This example retains its original period frame with gilt liner and displays excellent tone and clarity for its age. The print bears the full publication line at lower margin: “Lith. of Currier & Ives, 152 Nassau St., New York.”
A fine and historically significant Civil War–era lithograph, honoring General Grant and his family at the height of his national acclaim.
