Death of President Lincoln
Original Mourning Lithograph With Authenticated Wallpaper Fragment from the Lincoln Death Room
An extraordinary and historically significant display pairing an original mourning lithograph, “Death of President Lincoln: The Nation’s Martyr,” with an authenticated fragment of wallpaper from the very room in which Abraham Lincoln died on April 15, 1865.
The Lithograph:
This period engraving depicts the solemn deathbed scene inside the Petersen House, where the wounded President was carried after the shooting at Ford’s Theatre. The print features the cabinet members, military officers, and family gathered around Lincoln in his final moments—an iconic and widely cherished image in post-assassination memorial art.
Wallpaper Fragment:
Accompanying the framed lithograph is an original piece of wallpaper removed from the Lincoln death room, supported by a full National Park Service provenance letter dated October 1, 1980. The letter confirms:
-The sample is authentic and historically accurate
-It matches the wallpaper layers removed by the NPS during the 1932 restoration
-The bottom layer present in your sample corresponds with the wallpaper in the room on the night of Lincoln’s death
-The sample likely descended through the Marsteller family between 1900–1932, when the Petersen House operated privately before NPS control
The wallpaper piece retains its period green-blue surface with underlying material consistent with NPS findings. Included are the original family provenance notes that trace the piece through multiple generations.
This is a rare opportunity to own not only a period mourning print of Lincoln’s death, but also a documented architectural relic from the room where the President took his final breath. Items with direct, NPS-verified association to the Lincoln assassination are exceptionally scarce.
