Description
Dug Eagle Breast Plate & Hardee Hat Insignia
Spotsylvania Trenches (Recovered 1989)
A classic pair of Federal eagleĀ relics recovered in 1989 near the entrenchments at the Spotsylvania Battlefieldāone of the most intense and prolonged engagements of the Overland Campaign.
Included in the grouping:
Federal Eagle Breast Plate (Dug)
A well-worn but fully recognizable Union eagle breast plate, with the iconic spread-wing eagle still clearly visible. The plate shows heavy ground action typical of Spotsylvania finds, with softened detail and a deep battlefield patina. The reverse is missing its wire hooks, long rotted away from soil exposure, with remnants of lead backing present.
Federal Infantry Hat Insignia (Jeff Davis Fragment)
An attractive, excavated Jeff Davis Hardee Hat insignia showing excellent feather detail and crisp ornamental top. The attachment loops are missing, as expected from dug insignia, but the piece remains remarkably well preserved for a battlefield recovery.
BothĀ relics were found near the trenches at Spotsylvania, where Union and Confederate troops fought hand-to-hand in some of the most brutal combat of the Civil Warāespecially around the āMule Shoeā and the infamous āBloody Angle.ā A highly displayable pair of Federal relics from one of the bloodiest and most historically significant battlefields of the war.
Comes housed in 6 x 8riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
