Duparcq’s “Elements of Military Art and History” Cullum Translation with Philip Reade Association
A significant mid-19th century military text, Elements of Military Art and History by Edward de la Barre Duparcq, translated for American use by Brig. Gen. George W. Cullum, U.S.A. This influential work was widely read among professional officers and cadets, offering instruction in tactics, combined arms operations, and the theory of warfare at a time when the United States Army was preparing—knowingly or not—for the coming conflict of the 1860s.
Bound in its original red publisher’s cloth with decorative blind-stamped cover and gilt spine titling, the volume presents with expected wear, including fraying at the head and foot of the spine and general handling marks to the boards. The binding remains intact. Internally, the book shows typical age toning and scattered foxing, with a few condition issues including a loose front hinge and period repairs.
Of particular note is the clear ownership stamp of Lt. Col. Philip Reade, Inspector General, U.S.V., a documented Union officer who served with distinction during the Civil War. Reade saw service in multiple campaigns and his association adds meaningful historical interest and potential for further research. Also present is an earlier decorative bookplate, suggesting prior ownership before its wartime use.
Works such as this were part of the intellectual foundation of Civil War leadership, studied by officers responsible for the application of European military theory to American battlefields. Copies bearing identifiable officer ownership—particularly field-grade officers—are increasingly desirable.
A strong, historically resonant example of a foundational military text with direct Civil War association.
