Edmund Ruffin Autograph Letter Signed “Ed: Ruffin.” – Inventory Number: CON 554 /SOLD Edmund Ruffin Autograph Letter Signed “Ed: Ruffin.”  One page, 7.75″ x 9.75″, Shellbanks; October 10, 1834. Addressed to an unknown recipient, Ruffin apologizes for billing a client after payment had already been made. It reads in part: “I owe you an apology for having sent to you a bill for your subscription for vol. 9, after it had been paid. I have no defense for it, except that some mistakes are unavoidable – & that I have adopted such regulations in printing receipts, & requesting corrections of errors & omissions, as will prevent any loss to subscribers by any such mistake or omission…” A true believer in the Southern cause, Ruffin (1794-1865) is credited with firing the first shot of the war at Fort Sumter and committed suicide shortly after the end of the war rather than live with the “vile Yankee race”.   Inventory Number: CON 554 / SOLD
