Eli Whitney U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle 1851 Dated, New Jersey Marked
A very attractive and historically significant example of the famed U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle, popularly known as the “Mississippi Rifle.” This .54 caliber arm was manufactured by Eli Whitney, New Haven, Connecticut and is clearly dated 1851 on the lock plate.
The rifle bears a prominent New Jersey surcharge, indicating issue to that state’s militia forces. It exhibits the desirable arsenal barrel alteration, with the barrel turned at the breech to accept a socket bayonet—an important modification carried out to extend battlefield utility into the Civil War.
The brass furniture includes the distinctive oval “patch box” in the buttstock, whose lid surface is boldly inscribed with large “LD” letters, cut directly into the brass. The stock shows expected wear and age, lending character, while the metal surfaces have developed a rich and untouched plum-brown patina overall.
The Whitney-produced Mississippi rifle holds a special place in U.S. arms history, being widely carried in both the Mexican War and Civil War. Its association with New Jersey troops further connects it to state and militia history, and the arsenal alteration underscores its continued service life well into the 1860’s.
