Description
Excavated Confederate Read Artillery Shell
Original Confederate Read-pattern artillery shell, excavated and preserved in relic condition. Designed for use in rifled cannon—typically 3-inch or 10-pounder ordnance—these shells were among the most reliable and widespread artillery types used by Confederate batteries during the American Civil War. The Read shell is distinguishable by its tapering nose, thick cast iron body, and distinctive copper sabot base (now oxidized). This example displays significant surface rusting and battlefield patina, indicative of long burial, but remains stable and intact—making it an excellent artifact for collectors of Confederate ordnance.
