Excellent Civil War Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
Serial No. 54,958 | c. 1863–65
From the Collection of Don Troiani
A fine, high-condition example of the famed Spencer repeating carbine, the most innovative and battlefield-proven cavalry firearm of the Civil War. Chambered in .52 caliber rimfire and equipped with the distinctive seven-shot tubular magazine housed in the buttstock.
This carbine bears serial number 54,958, placing it in the Civil War production range. Standard 22 in. round barrel with crisp “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS.” address on the top flat and clear sights present. Metal surfaces are smooth and even throughout, showing excellent edges with strong traces of original finish and no pitting—far above the typical field-worn examples.
Walnut stock and forearm remain in excellent condition, showing only light handling marks and a tight, well-fitted profile. Stock bears a “41” stent and the forearm bears the sub inspectors mark with the initials “F.C.S.”. The buttstock retains a clear cartouche on the left wrist, evidence of U.S. government inspection. Mechanically fine, with the action cycling properly and the magazine tube functioning as designed. Original sling bar and ring intact on the left side.
A superior, crisp Spencer 1860 carbine—complete, mechanically sound, and exceptionally well-preserved—representing one of the most iconic cavalry arms of the Civil War from a legendary collection of artifacts.
