Exceptional Fifth Model Burnside Carbine – From the Collection of Don Troiani
Very fine Fifth Model Burnside carbine in remarkably well-preserved condition, formerly from the collection of renowned Civil War artist and historian Don Troiani. The metal surfaces retain a smooth, untouched patina with crisp edges and strong markings. The distinctive Burnside breech mechanism functions properly and displays the solid machining typical of late-war production.
The top of the frame shows clear manufacturer markings, and the overall metal has an even, honest tone consistent with careful long-term preservation. The walnut stock remains sound with attractive age coloration and tight fit to the metal.
Most notably, the bore is beautiful — bright with strong rifling, an increasingly scarce attribute on cavalry carbines that saw hard mounted service.
The Fifth Model Burnside was the most refined and widely issued variant, heavily used by Federal cavalry units from 1864 through the end of the war. Its distinctive tapered metallic cartridge and robust action made it one of the most recognizable carbines of the conflict.
