Exquisite Lady Liberty Carved Slate Dip Pen with Gilt Mounts
A beautifully executed 19th-century dip pen featuring an expertly carved bust of Lady Liberty forming the finial—an elegant patriotic motif popular. The elongated handle is crafted from faceted black slate, an uncommon material that lends the piece impressive weight, smoothness, and sculptural appeal.
The lower mount is fashioned in finely engraved gilt brass, displaying intricate decorative work that complements the carved upper section. The pen is fitted with its period steel nib marked “GEO. W. HUGHES – REG. STEEL.” George W. Hughes was a respected Birmingham maker whose nibs were widely imported and used in America throughout the mid-1800s.
Together, the artistic carving, the slate body, and the quality English nib make this an exceptional surviving writing instrument—both functional and highly collectible. A true standout artifact.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
