Description
Field Telescope with Original Oilcloth Case
A fine example of a 19th-century single-draw telescope, featuring a black japanned brass body with a beautifully wrapped leather grip and intact optics. The telescope remains housed in its original tan oilcloth case, a rare survival that protected instruments of this type from dust and moisture in the field.
The body retains a rich, dark finish with light wear from age and use, and the hand-stitched grip shows intricate cross-patterned leatherwork typical of mid-19th century craftsmanship. The objective lens retains good clarity and functions smoothly when extended.
Telescopes of this form were widely carried by Civil War officers, artillery observers, and naval personnel, serving as essential tools for reconnaissance and battlefield observation.
A striking and well-preserved field instrument — both practical and elegant.
