George Gordon Meade Jr. Gettysburg Grouping

With His Father General George G. Meade’s Envelope

This remarkable, museum-quality grouping descended directly from the personal effects of George Gordon Meade Jr., son of Major General George Gordon Meade, commanding general of the Army of the Potomac and the victor at Gettysburg. Items associated with the Meade family—especially originating from Meade Jr. himself—are exceptionally scarce and highly sought after.

This ensemble brings together two historically important artifacts, all originally owned and preserved by George Gordon Meade Jr.

1. Meade Family Book with General Meade’s Personal Armorial Bookplate

Title: The Rebel Invasion of Maryland & Pennsylvania and the Battle of Gettysburg
This early Gettysburg imprint comes from the library of George G. Meade Jr., who affixed to it the personal armorial bookplate of his father, General George Gordon Meade.
The bookplate depicts the Meade family crest and motto, “Forti et Fideli.” Items bearing Meade’s bookplate—especially with direct family provenance—are exceedingly rare and represent the highest tier of Gettysburg-related material.

2. General George G. Meade’s Signed “Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac – Official Business” Envelope

A wonderful wartime envelope signed by General George Gordon Meade in the left margin.
• Printed header reads: “Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac, Official Business.”
• Signature: “Geo. G. Meade.”
• This envelope was preserved by his son, George G. Meade Jr., within his personal collection. A faint inscription ot a Colonel is legible on the cover.

Autographed Meade HQ stationery is rare; finding one directly from the Meade family is exceptional.

This grouping offers a unified collection from the Meade family itself—not scattered pieces brought together later, but artifacts kept together by George G. Meade Jr. as personal mementos of his father and of the Gettysburg campaign. Combined, these pieces illustrate both the military legacy of the commanding general of Gettysburg and the personal connection between father and son who served together during America’s defining battle.
