Gettysburg Battlefield-Recovered New Testament
Extraordinary Civil War battlefield-recovered pocket New Testament, published by the American Bible Society, New York, 1853, found on the Gettysburg battlefield. The cloth-covered boards exhibit heavy field wear, with darkened staining and age consistent with the rain which followed on the battlefield and wartime handling.
Affixed to the front cover is an original handwritten note reading:
“From Gettysburg Battlefield July 22, 1863”
Firmly placing the recovery just weeks after the battle itself, during the immediate aftermath when the field was still being cleared of the dead and material remnants of combat.
The interior title page states:
The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ… American Bible Society… 1853.
The pages display significant water staining and warping—hallmarks of Gettysburg recovered paper relics, which were exposed to rain, burial, or extended outdoor conditions.
A faint pencil identification is present, now under careful examination and in the process of being deciphered.
Pocket New Testaments were among the most personal effects of Civil War soldiers. Often carried close to the body, they served as spiritual comfort and, in many documented cases, as literal life-savers—sometimes stopping bullets.
This example stands as a poignant relic of faith amid the carnage of July 1–3, 1863. A deeply moving and historically resonant Gettysburg artifact.
