Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Conversion Musket Identified to W. Buchele
A compelling and well-identified Harpers Ferry Model 1816 musket, altered to percussion and bearing the name “W. Buchele” punched into the stock using a period stippling technique. This example features a cone-in-barrel conversion, with a clearly marked lock showing “Harpers Ferry 1833” at the rear, alongside a strong Federal eagle and “US” forward of the hammer.
The barrel tang is dated 1833, with the final numeral faint yet discernible. Inspection and proof markings, including “VP” and an eagle head, remain crisp and legible at the breech. The barrel displays an attractive salt-and-pepper patina, while the remaining steel surfaces show a slightly darker, even tone consistent with age.
The stock bears multiple period markings, including inspector initials behind the side plate, as well as a small numeral “1” stamped on the side plate and rear of the trigger guard. Each of the three barrel bands is stamped with a matching “U.” Additional markings include the number “30” stamped near the butt plate tang, along with the carved initials “EH” on the left side of the butt stock and a block letter “P” carved forward of the lock on the right side.
Both sling swivels are absent. The musket retains an unusual and distinctive ramrod, squared toward the tip and fitted with a separate metal end—an intriguing feature worthy of further study.
Overall, a character-rich and identifiable Harpers Ferry conversion musket, combining strong markings, documented ownership, and honest service wear. A desirable piece for the advanced collector seeking a musket with individuality and presence.
