Description
High-Grade Pre-Civil War / Civil War Officer’s Silk Sash
c. 1840–1865**
A finely woven, regulation-style officer’s sash in a rich crimson red, constructed of high-quality twisted silk with exceptional body and sheen. The sash displays the classic multi-strand construction with long woven panels gathered into thick cords that terminate in large, tightly worked acorn knots—features consistent with higher-grade militia and U.S. Army officer accoutrements of the antebellum period through early Civil War years.
The silk remains supple with excellent color retention, and the distinctive deep red shade aligns with period use for company-grade and field-grade staff officers, as well as militia officers who favored more elaborate imported or custom-tailored sashes prior to and during the opening years of the war. The weave and quality are superior to typical wartime contract examples, showing the hallmarks of a privately purchased, higher-end item.
A handsome and authentic high-grade officer’s sash suitable for display alongside an identified sword, uniform group, or antebellum militia ensemble. It is worth noting that this style of sash is often associated with uniforms with strongly documented Confederate groupings.
