Description
Historic 1/6 Plate Daguerreotype of Jane C. Lee, Daughter of Confederate General William Henry Fitzhugh “Rooney” Lee
A remarkable and historically significant sixth-plate daguerreotype depicting Jane C. Lee, the daughter of Confederate Major General William Henry Fitzhugh “Rooney” Lee (1837–1891), son of General Robert E. Lee. The young child is seated in a striped dress against a dark studio backdrop, her image rendered with the extraordinary clarity and depth characteristic of the daguerreian process.
Accompanying the daguerreotype is an old typed identification note attributing the image to Jane C. Lee and outlining the distinguished military and political career of her father. Rooney Lee served prominently under J.E.B. Stuart during the Civil War, participating in major campaigns including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the defense of Richmond before attaining the rank of Major General. Following the war, he served in the United States House of Representatives from Virginia.
Childhood images directly associated with the Lee family are seldom encountered, making this an especially desirable and personal relic connected to one of America’s most famous military families. The daguerreotype remains housed in its period case with gilt brass mat and preserver.
A historic image not previously known, professionally cleaned, and sealed by Casey Waters. Incredible and historic find!
