Historic Mourning Lithograph of Abraham Lincoln
By Chr. Kimmel & Forster, Circa 1865
Fine 19th-century lithograph portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, published by Chr. Kimmel & Forster of 254 & 256 Canal Street, New York. This dignified rendering depicts Lincoln in a seated half-length pose, with his characteristic solemn expression, dressed in a dark frock coat and cravat. Below the image is an inscription that reads:
ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Sixteenth President of the United States.
Born Feb. 12th 1809. Died April 15th 1865.
Published by Chr. Kimmel & Forster, 254 & 256 Canal St. N.Y.
This lithograph was likely produced shortly after Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, as part of a national mourning effort and public demand for commemorative imagery. Kimmel & Forster were well-known New York lithographers who published numerous popular prints during the Civil War era.
Housed in an ornate silver-toned frame with a beaded and scrollwork design and matted with a cream double mat. This presentation enhances the period aesthetic and preserves the lithograph behind glass. Dimensions: Frame: 28 ½” x 33 ½” Sight: Approx. 20” x 25”
Lithograph presents in very good condition with light age toning and minimal foxing; no visible tears or losses. Frame is solid with minor wear consistent with age. A striking and historically resonant tribute to America’s martyred president, ideal for Civil War, presidential, or Americana collections.
