Identification Stencil, James R. Shearwood, 55th Kentucky Infantry

 

Tin identification stencil, privately purchased and used to mark a soldier’s personal effects and equipment, owned by James R. Sherwood of the 10th Kentucky Infantry. Shearwood enlisted as a private in December 1864 and deserted in March 1865. The stencil is decorated with a scroll and eagle motif and measures 2 ¾’ by 1 5/8”. In good condition with traces of ink from use. Fifty-fifth Infantry (Mounted). — Col., Weden O’Neal; Lieut. Col. Thomas J. Williams; Maj. Silas Howe. This regiment was raised under special authority from the war department and was organized at Covington in Nov. 1864.  On the Saltville expedition it performed good and efficient service and was favorably mentioned by the commanding general, among other troops of his division, for gallant bearing in the face of the enemy. After the return from Virginia the regiment was posted by detail in various counties of the state to protect the citizens from depredations of guerrillas, upon which duty it remained until mustered out at Louisville, Ky., on Sept. 19, 1865. James Shearwood: Enlisted on 12/7/1864 at Louisville, KY as a Private. On 12/7/1864 he mustered into “F” Co. KY 55th Infantry He deserted on 3/10/1865 at Covington, KY Fifty-fifth Infantry (Mounted) KENTUCKY (1-YEAR): Fifty-fifth Infantry (Mounted). — Col., Weden O’Neal; Lieut.-Col. Thomas J.
